The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak, with the number of confirmed infections rising to 3,200 and at least 1,405 deaths reported, according to government data released on Sunday.
The latest figures represent a sharp increase in cases, with approximately 1,000 new infections recorded within just 10 days as health authorities and medical teams struggle to contain the country’s 17th Ebola outbreak.
The outbreak was officially declared on May 15 and is being caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a variant that has created additional challenges for health workers because there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment available for this strain.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said the majority of cases have been reported in the northeastern province of Ituri, which accounts for nearly 90 percent of infections. The province shares borders with South Sudan and Uganda, raising concerns about the potential spread of the virus beyond affected areas.
According to the United Nations health agency, Ebola has now been detected across five provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including two provinces where the virus has recently expanded. Authorities are closely monitoring movement between communities as they attempt to limit further transmission.
Medical teams have faced significant logistical challenges while responding to the outbreak, particularly in reaching remote and affected areas. Many communities are located in regions with limited infrastructure, making it difficult to deliver medical supplies, conduct testing and provide emergency care.
Hedley Tah from the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) said that while international humanitarian organisations are prepared to support the response, the biggest challenge remains reaching communities affected by the virus.
UNHAS has been assisting by transporting healthcare workers, emergency response teams and essential equipment to outbreak zones. The organisation is also supporting the transportation of medical samples to laboratories, helping maintain testing and tracking systems needed to monitor the spread of Ebola.
The worsening outbreak has placed additional pressure on the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s healthcare system, which has previously experienced multiple Ebola emergencies. Similar health emergencies involving infectious diseases have also raised concerns about public health responses and the importance of rapid medical action. The country has recorded several outbreaks since Ebola was first identified there in 1976, including the world’s second-largest Ebola outbreak between 2018 and 2020.
Health officials continue to urge communities to cooperate with medical teams, report symptoms quickly and follow prevention measures. Early detection, isolation and contact tracing remain among the most important tools in limiting Ebola transmission.
As infections continue to rise, international health organisations warn that urgent support and improved access to affected regions will be essential to prevent the outbreak from becoming more difficult to control. Global health challenges have also increased attention on sustainable development, healthcare infrastructure and long-term preparedness strategies.
