Mexico Start World Cup With 2-0 Win Over South Africa

Mexico opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a confident 2-0 victory over South Africa at Mexico City Stadium, giving the co-hosts a strong start in Group A. The match had all the emotion of an opening World Cup fixture, but it was Mexico who handled the occasion better, using early pressure, sharper attacking movement and greater control in midfield to secure the three points.

The first goal of the tournament arrived in the 9th minute through Julián Quiñones. South Africa tried to play out from the back, but a poor pass from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams placed Sphephelo “Yaya” Sithole under immediate pressure. Érik Lira reacted quickly, won the ball and helped move it into Quiñones’ path. The forward took his chance calmly, driving a firm finish through the goalkeeper’s legs to give Mexico an early lead and ignite the home crowd.

Mexico remained the more dangerous side after going ahead. Raúl Jiménez forced Williams into a strong save early in the match and later came close again as South Africa struggled to create clean attacking moves. The visitors had very little threat in the first half and were forced to defend for long spells, while Mexico’s wide players and midfield runners kept finding space around the penalty area.

South Africa’s task became much harder in the 49th minute when Sithole was shown a straight red card for bringing down Brian Gutiérrez near the edge of the box as he was moving through on goal. With a man advantage, Mexico increased control and finally doubled the lead in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered a dangerous cross from the flank, and Jiménez met it with a strong header to score his first World Cup goal.

The match then became more chaotic. Themba Zwane was also sent off for South Africa after a video review for violent conduct, leaving the visitors with nine men. In stoppage time, Mexico captain César Montes received a red card for a challenge on Khuliso Mudau, but by then the result was already secure.

From a tactical view, Mexico deserved the win. They produced more attacking volume, finished with far greater threat and limited South Africa to very few chances. Opta’s numbers reflected that dominance, with Mexico recording 16 shots and 1.41 expected goals, compared with South Africa’s three shots and only 0.07 expected goals.

For Mexico, this was a professional and emotionally important start. They were not perfect, especially with the late red card, but they looked organised, aggressive and confident. South Africa, meanwhile, will need a major response after a difficult opener marked by defensive mistakes, limited attacking output and two costly dismissals.
