Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo secrecy was apparently taken to an unusual level, with many Nintendo employees reportedly learning about the game at the same time as fans. The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was first teased during Nintendo’s E3 2019 Direct, but according to former Nintendo of America staff, only a very small group inside the company knew the reveal was coming.
Former Nintendo of America marketing and public relations figures Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang recently discussed how confidential the project was before its announcement. Ellis said the sequel had a higher level of security than almost anything else he worked on during his time at Nintendo, with fewer than 10 people at Nintendo of America reportedly aware of the game before the Direct.
That secrecy meant some employees working around Nintendo’s E3 plans were still unaware that a major Zelda announcement was hidden inside the presentation. Ellis explained that because the reveal had to stay protected, he needed to prepare materials and guide certain teams without fully explaining what they were working toward.
The result was a rare moment where Nintendo employees were surprised alongside the public. Yang said the teaser created a huge reaction internally, with staff celebrating once the secret finally appeared during the livestream. For a company already known for guarding its biggest announcements, Tears of the Kingdom appears to have been one of its most carefully protected projects.

The first teaser did not even reveal the final title. At the time, Nintendo only confirmed that a sequel to Breath of the Wild was in development. The game would later be officially named The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom before launching on Nintendo Switch in 2023.
When it finally arrived, Tears of the Kingdom became one of Nintendo’s most acclaimed releases. Although Zelda is mainly a single-player adventure, its massive community reaction shows why major releases still compete for attention alongside the best multiplayer games in 2026. The game expanded the open-world formula of Breath of the Wild with new systems, sky islands, underground exploration and powerful building mechanics that gave players even more freedom.
Its success also showed why Nintendo had treated the reveal with such caution. Breath of the Wild was already one of the most important games in the company’s modern history, so announcing its sequel was always going to be a major moment. Keeping that surprise intact helped make the E3 2019 teaser one of the most memorable Nintendo reveals of the Switch era.
The story is also a reminder of how seriously Nintendo handles secrecy. While leaks are common across the gaming industry, the Tears of the Kingdom reveal shows that Nintendo can still create genuine surprise when it decides to lock down information. That kind of controlled reveal stands in contrast to the wider gaming market, where cloud gaming services, digital storefronts and online platforms can make information harder to contain. In this case, most employees experienced the news just like everyone else: watching the Direct and realizing a new Zelda adventure was real.
