PS5 Narrows Global Sales Gap With Nintendo Wii

Sony’s PlayStation 5 continues to close the worldwide sales gap with Nintendo’s Wii, according to the latest April 2026 hardware comparison estimates from VGChartz. The monthly comparison tracks both consoles over aligned launch periods, meaning each system is measured by the same number of months since release rather than by calendar year.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Wii launched in November 2006. Because both systems arrived in November, their holiday sales periods line up closely, making the comparison more useful than many other console sales matchups. As of April 2026, the PS5 has been available for 66 months, matching the Wii’s 66th month on the market in April 2012.

PS5 Gains Ground in April 2026

In the latest month, the PlayStation 5 reduced the Wii’s aligned sales lead by 161,408 units. Over the last 12 months, Sony’s console has outsold the Wii by around 5.98 million units, showing that the PS5 has been gaining momentum in the later stage of this comparison.

Despite that progress, the Wii is still ahead overall. After 66 months, the PlayStation 5 has reached an estimated 91.95 million units sold worldwide, while the Nintendo Wii had sold about 95.09 million units at the same point in its life cycle. That leaves the Wii with a lead of roughly 3.14 million units.

Global Sales Comparison

Console Aligned Month Estimated Global Sales
PlayStation 5 Month 66 91.95 million
Nintendo Wii Month 66 95.09 million
Current Lead Wii ahead by 3.14 million

The numbers show that the PS5 is now within striking distance of the Wii when comparing aligned monthly sales. However, catching the Wii’s lifetime total is still a separate challenge. Nintendo’s console eventually crossed 100 million units in its 85th month and finished with lifetime sales of about 101.63 million units.

Can PS5 Catch Wii Lifetime Sales?

The PlayStation 5 is currently around 9.68 million units behind the Wii’s lifetime total. That gap is not impossible to close, especially if Sony maintains strong sales through future price cuts, game releases and holiday demand. However, the pace will depend heavily on how long the PS5 remains Sony’s main console before attention shifts more strongly toward the next generation.

The Wii’s sales curve was shaped by massive mainstream appeal, family-friendly positioning and a unique motion-control concept that attracted many non-traditional players. The PS5, by comparison, is selling in a more competitive and more expensive hardware market, with strong demand from core gamers but less of the casual phenomenon that helped power the Wii.

Final Outlook

The latest figures show that the PlayStation 5 is still performing strongly more than five years after launch. It has narrowed the gap with the Wii over the past year and continues to move closer in aligned sales, even though Nintendo’s console remains ahead for now.

If PS5 sales remain steady through the rest of 2026, Sony could continue shrinking the difference and potentially move closer to the Wii’s lifetime total. For now, the Wii still holds the advantage, but the PS5’s recent pace keeps the comparison interesting.
