Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced officers are special crew members who can improve the Jackdaw and give Edward Kenway useful advantages at sea. While many ship upgrades can be purchased from the harbourmaster using gold, some powerful abilities are only available by recruiting officers during the story and through selected side quests.
Officers are not regular crew members. Each one has a specific role connected to the Jackdaw, and some of them unlock abilities that can make naval combat much easier. These upgrades can help you survive tougher battles, board enemy ships more effectively and handle dangerous fleets later in the game.
There are five officers to unlock in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Four of them are connected to the main story, while one is unlocked through a side quest line. Some officers come with unique abilities, while others are important story characters who join your crew without adding a special ship perk.
This guide explains how to unlock every officer in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, when they become available and what each one adds to the Jackdaw.
All Officers in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced
There are five officers available in the game:
- Adéwalé
- Lucy Baldwin
- The Padre
- Tobias “Deadman” Smith
- Anne Bonny
Adéwalé is unlocked early in the main story, while Lucy Baldwin and The Padre become available in Sequence 4 after reaching a key point in Edward’s journey. Tobias “Deadman” Smith and Anne Bonny arrive much later, during Sequence 11.

Although Lucy, The Padre and Deadman have their own quest lines, you do not need to finish every related mission to recruit them as officers. Their missions can be found under the “Officers” section in the map menu.
How to Unlock Adéwalé
Unlock mission: The Treasure Fleet
Sequence: Sequence 2
Officer role: Quartermaster
Special ability: None
Adéwalé is the first officer you unlock in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. You meet him during the main mission “The Treasure Fleet” in Sequence 2. At this point in the story, Edward and Adéwalé are both prisoners aboard a Spanish ship.
Adéwalé helps Edward escape, and together they take control of the vessel. This moment becomes an important turning point for Edward’s journey at sea, as Adéwalé later becomes the Jackdaw’s quartermaster.
Although Adéwalé remains one of the most important characters throughout the campaign, he does not provide a special ship ability or combat perk. His value is mainly tied to the story and his role as a key member of Edward’s crew.
How to Unlock Lucy Baldwin
Unlock mission: A Proper Shipwright
Sequence: Sequence 4
Officer role: Shipwright
Special ability: Reduced ship damage when bracing at the right time
Lucy Baldwin becomes available after completing the main mission “This Old Cove.” Once that mission is finished, Adéwalé tells Edward about Lucy and points him toward her location.
To unlock Lucy, you need to start the “A Proper Shipwright” quest. She is being held prisoner on a ship within a British fleet near Salt Key Bank. After rescuing her and completing the mission, Lucy joins the Jackdaw as its shipwright.
Lucy is one of the most useful officers because her ability helps reduce incoming damage. If you brace at the correct moment before an enemy attack hits the Jackdaw, the ship takes significantly less damage. This can be very helpful during difficult naval battles, especially when facing larger ships or multiple enemies at once.
Lucy also has her own quest line after she joins the crew. These missions explore more of her personal story, including family-related problems, but you do not need to complete the full quest line to unlock her as an officer.

How to Unlock The Padre
Unlock mission: A Second Chance
Sequence: Sequence 4
Officer role: Master-at-arms
Special ability: Ram-dash ability for the Jackdaw
The Padre can also be unlocked after completing “This Old Cove” in Sequence 4. His real name is Abel Galvão, but he is known as The Padre. Adéwalé describes him as a dangerous figure from the seas, though by the time Edward finds him, he has left his old life behind and turned toward religion.
To recruit The Padre, you need to begin the “A Second Chance” side quest. He can be found in Caracol, a small village located on the southeast side of the map. After completing the mission, he agrees to join the Jackdaw as master-at-arms.
The Padre is useful in two main ways. First, he takes part in fights during boarding actions and fort battles, giving Edward extra support in close combat. Second, he unlocks the ram-dash ability for the Jackdaw.
Ram-dash lets the Jackdaw surge forward at high speed for a short time, allowing you to slam into enemy ships with greater force. This ability is especially useful when you want to close distance quickly, finish off damaged ships or create an opening during chaotic naval battles.
How to Unlock Tobias “Deadman” Smith
Unlock mission: A World Without Gold — It’s a Start
Sequence: Sequence 11
Officer role: Master gunner
Special ability: Extra broadside cannon salvo
Tobias “Deadman” Smith is unlocked much later than most other officers. To recruit him, you need to progress to Sequence 11 and complete the main mission “Everything is Permitted.” After that, the “A World Without Gold” quest line becomes available.
This quest line is more demanding than the earlier officer missions. You will need to complete several objectives before eventually finding Deadman. One of the major challenges involves fighting a British fleet led by the HMS Demolition. This battle can be difficult, so it is a good idea to upgrade the Jackdaw before attempting it.
After surviving the fight and progressing to the “It’s a Start” objective, return to Great Inagua. There, you can speak with Tobias and recruit him as the Jackdaw’s master gunner.
Deadman has one of the strongest officer abilities in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. His perk allows the Jackdaw’s broadside cannons to fire an additional salvo, increasing your damage output during naval combat. This is extremely valuable against powerful ships, fleets and late-game sea battles.

How to Unlock Anne Bonny
Unlock mission: Everything is Permitted
Sequence: Sequence 11
Officer role: Quartermaster
Special ability: None
Anne Bonny joins the Jackdaw later in the story after completing the main mission “Everything is Permitted” in Sequence 11. By this point, Edward needs someone strong enough to help manage his crew, and Anne is a natural fit for the role.
Before joining the Jackdaw, Anne had years of experience dealing with pirates at her tavern, making her more than capable of handling Edward’s crew. She becomes the ship’s quartermaster and plays an important role in the later part of the story.
Like Adéwalé, Anne does not provide a special officer ability. Her role is more narrative-focused, but she remains one of the most important characters connected to Edward’s crew and the Jackdaw’s final chapters.
Best Officers to Unlock First
Because some officers are tied to the story, you will unlock them naturally as you progress. However, Lucy Baldwin and The Padre are especially worth recruiting as soon as they become available in Sequence 4.
Lucy’s damage-reduction ability can help you survive tougher ship battles, while The Padre’s ram-dash gives the Jackdaw a useful offensive tool. Together, they make naval combat more flexible and help prepare you for harder encounters later in the campaign.
Deadman is also highly valuable, but he arrives much later and requires stronger ship upgrades before you can comfortably complete his quest line. Once unlocked, his extra cannon salvo makes him one of the best officers for players who focus heavily on naval combat.
Why Officers Matter in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced
Officers add another layer to ship progression in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Standard upgrades improve the Jackdaw’s weapons, armor and storage, but officers provide unique benefits that cannot simply be purchased.
If you want to dominate the seas, complete boarding battles more efficiently and survive late-game naval encounters, unlocking every officer is worth the effort. For players looking beyond single-player adventures, the best multiplayer games in 2026 offer a different kind of challenge built around teamwork, competition and online progression. Some officers strengthen the ship directly, while others expand Edward’s crew and deepen the story. That deeper storytelling is one reason Assassin’s Creed remains one of the gaming franchises often discussed alongside major video game adaptations in film and television.
By recruiting Adéwalé, Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, Tobias “Deadman” Smith and Anne Bonny, you will fully develop the Jackdaw’s leadership and gain access to the best officer-related advantages available in the game.
