Abu Dhabi self-driving car licence plates have been introduced for the first time, marking another step in the emirate’s push toward smart and autonomous transport. The new plates are designed specifically for driverless vehicles used in commercial services and testing programmes, helping authorities identify and monitor them more easily on the road.
The plates come in a unified blue design and carry clear labels depending on the vehicle’s purpose. Commercial autonomous vehicles will display “Auto Drive,” while vehicles still operating under trials or pilot programmes will carry the label “Test.”
The new system is expected to support road safety and help authorities track how autonomous vehicles operate across Abu Dhabi. It will also make it easier to ensure that companies using driverless technology follow approved technical and operational standards.
The move comes as Abu Dhabi continues to build a wider regulatory and operational framework for autonomous mobility. The step also fits into the wider future of transport in the UAE, where rail, autonomous vehicles and smart mobility systems are gradually reshaping how residents move between cities. Earlier in July, Abu Dhabi Mobility, operating under the Department of Municipalities and Transport, launched a central control room to manage and monitor autonomous vehicle operations across the emirate.
The control room is designed to improve oversight through real-time monitoring, data analysis and decision-support tools. It allows authorities to follow vehicle movements, monitor speeds and routes, coordinate emergency responses and generate reports that can help improve future operations.
This latest licence plate system also fits into Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy of testing and regulating new mobility technologies before they are expanded more widely. Similar experiments with autonomous delivery technology show how UAE cities are testing new systems carefully before allowing them to become part of everyday public services. In February 2026, Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre began supervised road trials of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology as part of a structured regulatory framework focused on safety and real-world performance testing.
Abu Dhabi has also been working on rules beyond road transport. In late June, the emirate issued new requirements for testing autonomous and remotely operated small marine vessels, including a mandatory permit system to protect maritime safety, people, property and the marine environment.
With the launch of dedicated licence plates, Abu Dhabi is making autonomous vehicles more visible, regulated and accountable. The step may look simple, but it plays an important role in preparing the city for a future where self-driving transport becomes a normal part of daily mobility.
