Qatar earned their first-ever point at a men’s FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Switzerland in their Group B opener at Levi’s Stadium. Switzerland dominated large parts of the match and looked set for victory after taking an early lead, but Qatar stayed alive, defended with determination and found a stoppage-time equaliser that turned the result into a historic moment.

Switzerland started as the stronger side and quickly took control of possession. Their early pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Breel Embolo scored from the penalty spot after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada was judged to have fouled Remo Freuler inside the area. Embolo finished calmly, giving Switzerland a 1-0 lead and putting Qatar under immediate pressure.

The penalty decision created some debate because of a possible offside in the build-up, but the goal stood after a review. From that point, Switzerland continued to create chances and should have extended their lead. They moved the ball well through midfield, used width effectively and forced Qatar to defend for long periods. However, their finishing let them down, and they failed to turn their control into a second goal.

Qatar struggled to create clear openings for much of the match, but they remained organised and relied on defensive discipline to stay within reach. Switzerland finished with 26 shots and 3.24 expected goals, according to Opta Analyst, which underlined how many opportunities they missed. Qatar, by contrast, had far fewer chances but made one of their biggest moments count.

The equaliser arrived deep into stoppage time. In the 90+4th minute, Homam Ahmed delivered a cross into the box, and captain Boualem Khoukhi rose to meet it with a powerful header. The ball found the net, stunning Switzerland and sparking huge celebrations among the Qatari players and supporters. It was a goal that rewarded Qatar’s refusal to give up, even when the match had appeared to be slipping away.

From a tactical point of view, Switzerland will see this as two points dropped. They controlled territory, created enough chances to win comfortably and limited Qatar for most of the game. Their failure to finish the match, however, proved costly. Qatar, meanwhile, showed resilience, patience and belief, even if they spent long spells under pressure.

For Qatar, the result carries emotional and historical value. After losing all three matches as hosts in 2022, earning a World Cup point represents clear progress. For Switzerland, the draw is frustrating and leaves Group B wide open, with Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina also drawing 1-1 in the other match.
