A violent confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians erupted near the Susya settlement in the southern occupied West Bank on Saturday, adding to growing concerns over a sharp escalation in violence across the territory.
According to the Israeli military, the incident began when groups of Israelis and Palestinians threw stones at each other near the hilltop settlement. During the confrontation, a Palestinian man allegedly seized a firearm belonging to an off-duty Israeli soldier or civilian security guard. The military said shots were fired into the air before the suspect dropped the weapon and fled the area. Israeli forces launched a search operation and established roadblocks nearby.
A 25-year-old Israeli man was injured after being struck by a stone and was taken for medical treatment. No Palestinian casualties were immediately reported, while Palestinian officials had not issued a formal account of the incident at the time of publication.
The confrontation came only one day after a far deadlier episode near the Palestinian village of Tell, southwest of Nablus. Four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers were killed after a dispute involving Israeli settlers, Palestinian residents and armed security personnel escalated into gunfire. Israeli and Palestinian accounts differ over how the violence began, with Palestinian officials saying settlers approached or entered the village, while the Israeli military initially described the Israelis as hikers before confirming they were armed.
Following the Tell incident, Israeli forces launched a large operation across the northern West Bank, questioning dozens of residents, conducting house searches and arresting several Palestinians. Roadblocks were erected around the area, while additional troops were deployed amid fears of further retaliatory attacks. Subsequent settler violence was also reported in nearby Palestinian communities, including attacks on homes, property and religious buildings.
Violence in the West Bank has risen significantly since the Gaza war began following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The period has seen repeated Israeli military raids, Palestinian attacks and a growing number of confrontations involving Israeli settlers.
More than 500,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank, excluding East Jerusalem. The United Nations, the International Court of Justice and most of the international community consider the settlements illegal under international law, while Israel disputes that interpretation.
The latest incidents have increased fears of a broader cycle of retaliation. With Israeli forces expanding operations and tensions remaining high between settlers and Palestinian communities, security conditions across the occupied West Bank are expected to remain highly unstable.
