Tatiana Maslany Explains Coen Brothers Influence on Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed

Tatiana Maslany has opened up about the unusual tone of her Apple TV series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, saying the show takes inspiration from the dark, strange comedy often associated with the Coen Brothers. The Orphan Black and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star appeared at IGN Live 2026, where she discussed the series and introduced a new clip featuring her character in a chaotic and dangerous moment involving a nail gun.

The show stars Maslany as Paula, a newly divorced mother whose life spirals into a world of blackmail, murder and youth soccer after she believes she has witnessed a crime during an online encounter with a camboy.

Paula Is Not a Traditional Action Hero

During her IGN Live appearance, Maslany explained that Paula is not someone trained for danger or violence. In the new clip, Paula finds herself in a tense situation and grabs a nail gun as the scene escalates. Maslany said the moment reflects how her character reacts out of panic rather than skill.

She described Paula as someone who is not naturally a fighter, but who desperately uses whatever object is nearby when she is forced into danger. According to Maslany, Paula has already used a tuna can as a weapon in the series, with other ordinary household items becoming part of her survival instincts. That clumsy, improvised approach is part of what gives the show its comic edge.

Coen Brothers and Fargo Helped Shape the Tone

Maslany said Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed was influenced by the Coen Brothers and films such as Fargo. She pointed to the way those stories mix strange humour with very dark subject matter, creating a tone that is difficult to define. That same balance appears to be central to Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which moves between crime, danger, absurdity and emotional stakes.

Rather than presenting violence in a sleek or heroic way, the series finds comedy in panic, confusion and human awkwardness. Maslany said she enjoys that the show lives in a space that is hard to pin down tonally. It is dark, but not entirely grim. It is funny, but not light. It is dangerous, but often in a messy and very human way.

Maslany Enjoys Playing a Character Who Is Not Cool Under Pressure

Maslany joked that she prefers playing someone inexperienced in dangerous situations because she does not have to make the character look polished or capable. She said there is more room for comedy when a character is clumsy and visibly out of her depth. Instead of acting like a trained fighter, Paula reacts like a regular person caught in extreme circumstances.

That makes the violence less stylised and more unpredictable. Paula is not moving through the story with confidence. She is trying to survive moment by moment. For Maslany, that creates a more interesting form of human behaviour, one where fear, instinct and awkwardness become part of the character’s language.

Paula’s Story Is Still Grounded in Family

Despite the show’s bizarre and violent twists, Maslany said Paula’s motivation remains deeply relatable. At the centre of the story is her desire to build a safer life with her daughter, away from the noise, danger and unresolved complications of the past.

That emotional goal gives the series a human foundation beneath its dark comedy and crime-thriller elements. Paula may be surrounded by blackmail, murder and escalating chaos, but her main fight is still about protecting her relationship with her child and finding a way forward.

The Series Will Challenge Viewers’ Loyalties

Maslany also teased that future episodes will make viewers question which characters they trust. As the season continues, new revelations will shift how audiences understand certain people in Paula’s orbit. Maslany suggested that some character turns may make viewers reconsider how far they are willing to follow or support them.

That kind of shifting loyalty fits the show’s mix of crime story and offbeat comedy. In a world where people are hiding secrets and making desperate choices, the audience may not always know who is safe, who is dangerous or who is telling the truth.

New Episodes Release Weekly on Apple TV

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is currently streaming on Apple TV, with new episodes released on Wednesdays. With Maslany in the lead role and a tone that blends crime, dark comedy and surreal danger, the series appears to be positioning itself as a strange character-driven thriller rather than a straightforward mystery.

For viewers who enjoy stories in the style of Fargo or other Coen Brothers-inspired crime comedies, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed may offer a similarly uneasy mix of humour, violence and moral uncertainty.
